Doctoral programme in multidisciplinary research in renewable natural resources

The Doctoral Programme in Multidisciplinary Research in Renewable Natural Resources is based at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki. It combines basic and applied research in agriculture, microbiology, food, forestry and their value chains. The programme studies natural processes from the molecular to the global scale, together with socio-economic aspects and the related environmental policy context.

A doctoral degree consists of a doctoral thesis and studies worth 30 credits. The studies include discipline-specific studies and transferable skills studies. All doctoral researchers at the University of Helsinki must complete 1 credit of research ethics and 2 credits of internationalisation. The thesis can be an article-based thesis or a monograph, and it is usually written in English. Full-time study takes approximately four years, and part-time study is also possible.

The University of Helsinki says the programme provides in-depth training for careers in academic research and expert appointments locally and abroad. It trains doctoral researchers in fields including agriculture, microbiology, food, forestry and their value chains.

• A relevant previous degree with sufficient studies in a discipline suitable for the topic of the proposed doctoral thesis
• Students graduating from master’s programmes in microbiology, food science, plant biology, agricultural or forest sciences, environmental sciences or biology can enter the programme
