Doctoral Programme in One Health

The Doctoral Programme in One Health at the University of Helsinki covers the links between human, animal and environmental health. It focuses on animal health and welfare, translational animal models and comparative medicine, clinical veterinary medicine, food safety and food systems, environmental health, antimicrobial resistance, and related research questions across species boundaries.

The degree consists of a doctoral thesis and 30 credits of studies. The studies include discipline-specific studies and transferable skills studies. Compulsory doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki include 1 credit of research ethics and 2 credits of internationalisation. Full-time study takes approximately four years. Part-time study is also possible.

The programme is for doctoral researchers whose previous degree is in a relevant field. The University of Helsinki says it trains researchers who can contribute to animal, human, food and environmental health research and to the wider field of One Health.

Applicants must have completed one of the following:

• an applicable second-cycle university degree
• an applicable second-cycle degree from a university of applied sciences
• an applicable education at an institution abroad that provides eligibility for equivalent higher education in the country in question

A degree is regarded as relevant if it includes sufficient studies in a discipline which, given the topic of the proposed doctoral thesis, can be regarded as a suitable basis for doctoral studies.
