The Doctoral Programme in Science trains scientists and experts in natural sciences and mathematics. It covers atmospheric sciences, chemistry, computer science, geosciences and geography, mathematics and statistics, materials research and nanoscience, and particle physics and universe sciences. The programme includes both fundamental and applied research and addresses climate change, energy, health, technology, and sustainable resource use using theoretical and experimental methods.
The programme lasts four years of full-time work. Doctoral researchers can also complete the degree through part-time study. The structure includes 5–25 credits of field-specific studies and supporting studies, 5–25 credits of transferable skills studies, and a doctoral dissertation. International conferences, research visits, and other scholarly activities can be included in the studies.
University of Helsinki describes the programme as preparing doctoral researchers for roles in academia, research institutes, industry, government agencies, and international organisations.
You are eligible to apply if you plan to conduct doctoral studies in one of the fields of the Doctoral Programme in Science and your previous degree is from a relevant field. A degree is regarded as relevant if it includes sufficient studies in a discipline which, given the topic of the proposed doctoral dissertation, can be regarded as a suitable basis for doctoral studies.
