The Master’s Programme in Financial and Management Accounting teaches accounting for companies and other organisations. You study financial reporting, financial statement analysis, firm valuation, auditing, management control systems, cost accounting, internal control, sustainability reporting, and issues related to sustainable business. You can specialise in Financial Accounting or Management Accounting. Financial Accounting covers profit and loss accounting, financial statement data in decision-making, incentive compensation of top management, auditing and firm valuation. Management Accounting covers cost accounting, budgeting, capital investment planning and management control.
The programme runs for two years and consists of four terms of 30 credits each. Teaching is in English and uses contact teaching, with different courses using independent learning, blended teaching or online teaching. Several first-year courses include mandatory on-campus sessions in Oulu. In the second year, you choose courses more freely and deepen your expertise. The master’s thesis is worth 30 credits and includes seminar sessions. Courses include real-life projects and internships made for companies.
University of Oulu says the programme gives a solid theoretical and methodological foundation in accounting and is suitable for applicants with a background in business studies, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics or engineering. It also says the programme provides a foundation for doctoral studies in Financial and Management Accounting. Accounting students can also apply for a double degree with Pforzheim University and complete the second year in Germany.
