The Doctoral Programme in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering leads to the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology or Doctor of Philosophy. It is organised around 30 ECTS credits of doctoral studies, plus a doctoral thesis and public defence. The programme includes general and transferable skills, field-specific studies, and teaching tasks.
Students can specialise in Electrical Engineering, Information Processing Science, Communications Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Applied and Computational Mathematics. In Information Processing Science, the field-specific studies include the mandatory course Advanced Research Methods. Study and research plans are prepared with the principal supervisor.
The University of Oulu says the programme aims to prepare students for work as independent researchers or specialists in demanding expert positions. Doctoral studies are often linked with international or national research projects involving universities, research institutes and industrial companies.
