Master's Programme in Materials Research, Master of Science

University of Helsinki’s Master’s Programme in Materials Research is a two-year Master of Science programme in physical sciences. It covers the synthesis, processing, structure and properties of inorganic materials, modelling methods in materials research, biomolecular systems, polymers, electronics, ultrasonics, optics, and methods of physics in medicine.

The programme is organised around a personal study plan and a chosen study track. It includes common courses, a mandatory alternative course in chemistry or physics, advanced studies, and a 30-credit master’s thesis, which is usually completed in a research group within the Faculty of Science or in an outside research institute or company. Teaching is in English and delivered as contact teaching.

The programme has seven study tracks: experimental materials physics, computational materials physics, medical physics, polymer materials chemistry, inorganic materials chemistry, electronics and industrial applications, and sustainable materials. The University of Helsinki says the programme combines the expertise of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, and some teaching is linked to the Helsinki Institute of Physics.
