The Master’s Programme in Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies at the University of Helsinki studies Russia, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia through history, society and politics. It also covers regional conflicts, security challenges, migration, identities, nationalism, governance, the rule of law, and environmental and energy politics. The programme draws on interdisciplinary approaches from the humanities and social sciences.
The programme is a two-year, 120 ECTS master’s degree taught in English with contact teaching. It is organised around 60 ECTS of obligatory studies, 30 ECTS of optional studies, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. Students can also take an optional internship, and the thesis seminar includes guidance and peer feedback. The programme organises two Ukrainian Studies modules and works with ExpREES and other international master’s programmes at the University of Helsinki.
The University of Helsinki says the programme is for applicants with a genuine interest in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe and a first cycle degree in a field relevant to the programme, including humanities or social sciences. It leads to the Master of Arts degree and can support further doctoral study.
Applicants need a completed bachelor’s degree in a field applicable to the programme, including studies in the humanities or social sciences. The programme is also suitable for applicants who have completed a first cycle degree with basic and intermediate studies, a minimum of 60 ECTS credits, in a field applicable to the master’s programme or studies of an equivalent level or scope. At least 30 of these 60 credits must be in the humanities or social sciences. Direct admission is available for the University of Helsinki Bachelor’s Programme in Liberal Arts and Sciences students who have completed the studies required for MAREEES.
