Master's Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods, Master of Science

The Master’s Programme in Theoretical and Computational Methods gives a basis in theoretical methods, modelling and simulations, and mathematical and numerical analysis for physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and life sciences. University of Helsinki says the special feature of the programme is that you can combine studies in these disciplines into one syllabus. The programme is suited to basic and applied research.

The degree is 120 ECTS credits and can be completed in two academic years. It contains 90 credits of courses in the Master’s programme, including a 30-credit Master’s thesis, and 30 credits of other studies. Your studies are based on a personal study plan made with an academic mentor. The studies can also include a traineeship and supplementary courses. There are no study tracks; you tailor a course combination from course packages in physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and data science.

University of Helsinki presents the programme as strongly oriented towards research and as a gateway to further studies in physics, mathematics, chemistry and computer science. The programme is taught by researchers in groups on the Kumpula campus, and the thesis may be written in a research group.
