Music and Science, Master of Arts

The Master’s Degree Programme in Music and Science studies music’s role in modern society. It covers how humans experience and perceive music, how music influences moods and emotions, and why music brings people together. The programme includes music research and the technologies used to study these questions.

The degree is 120 ECTS credits and takes two years of contact teaching. It includes advanced studies in music and science, dissertation and work life studies, and optional study units or modules. The programme includes 40 ECTS of elective study modules, and students make a personal study plan with a pedagogical mentor at the start of their studies.

The master’s thesis is worth 30 ECTS. Thesis topics are linked to the department’s music research profile, and the thesis can be written in Finnish or English. The thesis is completed during Master’s Seminars, where students develop a research plan and receive feedback from professors and peers.
