Nanoscience, Master of Science

Nanoscience at the University of Jyväskylä combines physics, chemistry and biology. The programme covers the experimental and theoretical study of molecules, materials and structures at the 1–100 nanometre scale. Students use high-tech methods and instruments to characterise and control single molecules, produce nanoscale materials, and modify them into functional devices.

The degree has compulsory courses in nanoscience, advanced-level courses in the chosen specialisation, and optional studies based on the student’s interests and career objectives. The three specialisations are chemistry, physics, and biology, and the specialisation is chosen based on previous studies. The master’s thesis includes a literature review, experimental or theoretical work, and a discussion. It can be completed within a research group and can also be done with companies or other research institutes.

The programme qualifies students for doctoral studies in chemistry, physics, and biology.
