Northern Tourism, Master of Social Sciences

The Master’s Degree Programme in Northern Tourism studies tourism with a focus on the northern and Arctic regions. It covers sustainable northern tourism, tourism research and methodologies, and the themes of Arctic tourism in times of change, environmental crisis, mobilities in peripheral areas, future travel trends, Arctic winter tourism, and destination development in the Arctic areas.

The programme lasts two years and includes Advanced Studies in Tourism Research and methodologies, joint courses on Northern Tourism, elective studies, and a thesis and thesis seminar. The joint component consists of two online courses and a field course. Students write their Master’s thesis in English on a Northern Tourism theme agreed with the supervisor.

University of Lapland describes the programme as based on research collaboration in the University of the Arctic Thematic Network on Northern Tourism. It says the programme prepares students for northern tourism and for the sustainable development of the Arctic region.
