Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research is a two-year Master of Social Sciences at Tampere University. The programme takes a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to peace and conflict research. Students study wars and conflicts, their short- and long-term consequences, conflict transformation, and the conditions for peaceful change.
The first year begins with the introductory courses “Understanding Conflicts and Violence” and “Practices and Ideas of Peace: Critical and Historical Perspectives”, followed by thematic courses such as Decolonizing Peace, Feminist Peace Research and Everyday Peace Approaches, and Human Mobilities and Transnational Dimensions of Conflicts. The second year focuses on thesis seminars and writing the Master’s thesis under the guidance of a personal thesis supervisor. Students may also complete an optional internship.
The programme is hosted by Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI). It also draws on close contacts with practitioners in conflict resolution, civilian crisis management and mediation, and it includes co-operation with universities and organisations such as the National Defence University and CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation.
