The PhD in Physics at Budapest University of Technology and Economics is offered through the Doctoral School of Physical Sciences. Students conduct independent research under supervision across research areas that include condensed matter physics and materials science, quantum technology, quantum computing and communications, classical and quantum field theory, nanophysics and nanotechnology, spintronics, laser physics, complex networks, medical physics, applied and quantum optics, and nuclear technology and reactor physics. Advanced courses and guided teaching support the research work.
The program has 8 semesters. It combines guided research, advanced courses (including participation in international summer schools or workshops), and teaching under guidance through supervised instruction on BSc/MSc courses. Students develop scientific communication through publication in peer reviewed international journals and presentation of results at international conferences. Progress includes a midterm evaluation and a comprehensive examination to enter the second stage of training, followed by a public thesis defense.
