The Diploma in Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary disability studies diploma designed to build knowledge, skills, and competencies for a new career or to add to an unrelated degree or certificate. It prepares students for national or state qualifications and follows a progressive curriculum with 60-credit-hour programs. Learners study disability theory, policy, service, research, and practice, including overview, critique, and specialization.
Students explore critical frameworks that explain disadvantages and exclusions linked to personal and societal responses to impairment. The program also covers how disability activists, scholars, and policies have re-conceptualized disability through an empowering social, political, and human rights perspective as a human diversity approach and a source of community. Teaching uses problem-based learning, seminars, guest lectures, video and field trips, computer-based simulations, industry linkage, and case studies, with online delivery via the Daystar E-Learning campus platform.
