MSc Degree in Sociology and Gender Studies

The MSc Degree in Sociology and Gender Studies at Women’s University in Africa builds advanced knowledge in Sociology and Gender Studies through courses that use classical and contemporary sociological theories and gender conceptual frameworks. Students also explore links between Sociology and disciplines relevant to gender studies, with a focus on critical thinking about contemporary sociological theories and gendered questions of democracy and social justice.

The programme takes one and a half years on a full-time basis. It is delivered in block release and conventional classes. The master’s degree includes 8 core courses offered in two batches of 4 courses each semester, plus a dissertation. Assessment uses coursework (group and individual) through written or class presentation formats, with coursework contributing 30% and examinations contributing 70%.

• A Bachelors’ degree in Humanities and Social Sciences.
• Employment in the government, Non-Governmental Organisations, or any other civil society organisation in the area of gender policy and women’s rights is an added advantage.
• At least two years of professional experience relevant to the programme is an added advantage.
• Applicants must have a good written command of English – the working language of the course.
