Church Music, Bachelor and Master of Music

Church Music, Bachelor and Master of Music at the University of the Arts Helsinki focuses on vocal music, conducting and organ music. Students also study accompaniment, arranging and composing music, improvisation, pedagogy, all-around music skills and research skills. The programme includes studies in theology and pedagogy, and students can choose teacher’s pedagogical studies or studies that give qualifications for a church musician post within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

The degree runs for 3 years and 6 months at bachelor’s level and 2.5 years at master’s level. Students can apply to study in Helsinki or Kuopio. At master’s level, students choose a specialisation in choral conducting, singing, organ music or research. They can also carry out a project or design their own module of artistic studies. The degree requirements include a written work and a thesis project.

The degree gives competence to work as a cantor and in several other roles in the field of music.
