Doctoral Programme in Language Studies

The Doctoral Programme in Language Studies is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programme in languages. It combines research in languages, literature and culture across different language areas with translation and interpretation, using different theoretical frameworks. Study also covers the interaction between language and society, including the linguistic challenges of a globalised, multilingual and multicultural society, and communication in special fields.

The programme is a doctoral degree of 240 ECTS credits and planned to take 4 years. Teaching is in Finnish and English and the mode is blended teaching. The programme has special emphasis on the intersections of language and culture and on translation studies, including the sociology of translation and translation and interpretation as professional operations.

The programme is for doctoral students majoring in languages and translation. Tampere University says graduates are generally hired for research and teaching positions and socially significant expert positions.
