At the University of Oulu, geography is divided into physical geography, human geography, tourism geography, geoinformatics, and regional development and regional policy. The Master of Science in Geography focuses on expertise, specialization, and research skills. It includes methodological studies in quantitative and qualitative methods and a master’s thesis. Students in the double degree route specialise in tourism geography.
The double degree is co-operated with the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany and Libera Università di Lingue e Comunicazione IULM in Italy. Students study half of their degree at the University of Oulu and half at one of the partner universities. The programme is taught in English and includes contact teaching, on-campus full-time study, some online courses, field research, and an excursion course.
The double degree structure gives a semester-by-semester study pattern across the home university and the partner institution. In the final semester, students write the master’s thesis. The University of Oulu says the degree gives eligibility to apply for further doctoral studies.
