The Biomedical Engineering master’s programme at the University of Oulu covers medical imaging, machine learning, biomaterials, biomedical measurements, wireless communications, human anatomy and physiology, and digital health solutions. It also includes health technology software and electronics, artificial intelligence and data analysis, biomechanics, and medical imaging. Students can choose one of three orientations: Medical Data Analysis, Biomedical Materials and Imaging, or Connected Health Systems.
The programme lasts two years and is worth 120 ECTS credits. It includes compulsory studies, optional courses in the student’s personal study plan, Finnish language studies, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. Teaching uses contact teaching, blended teaching, distance teaching, and independent learning. The thesis may be done with an external organisation or within a university research group. Students can also take part in project work, internships, and research projects, and these can be completed at the university or with industry.
The University of Oulu says the programme is delivered in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine, with close cooperation with Oulu University Hospital and strong ties to the health technology industry. It is intended to prepare graduates for expert roles in healthcare, industry, and research, as well as further studies.
