The Master of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Oulu is based on research work in the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. Students study through lecture courses, online courses, self-study courses, practical courses and laboratory projects. The programme lets students specialise and take courses from outside the faculty. The field of specialisation is Medical Stem Cell & Molecular Biology, and another stated specialisation is Molecular medicine.
The degree takes 2 years and carries 120 ECTS credits. It is taught in English and combines contact teaching, blended teaching, independent learning, distance teaching and online teaching. The programme includes practical research work in laboratories, with 4 to 9 months of experience in practical research laboratory work on completion. The Master’s thesis is written as part of the programme and ends with an oral examination on the project’s conduct and outcomes.
Each student is individually guided by a University teacher and develops a personal study plan. Parts of the practical work, training or thesis work can be completed outside Oulu, in other research groups, biochemical laboratories or biotech companies.
