The Master’s Programme in Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation studies ecology, evolutionary biology and biodiversity conservation. It covers biology from genes to populations and species, and from individuals to communities and biodiversity. The programme has three thematic areas: ecology, evolutionary biology and biodiversity conservation.
The curriculum is two years and totals 120 ECTS credits. It includes compulsory and elective studies, a written MSc thesis worth 30 ECTS, and two courses that support the planning and completion of the thesis. You can also choose studies from any other Master’s Programme at the University of Helsinki. The programme has two study tracks: Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation, and Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation, biology subject teacher.
The programme is designed for students interested in biodiversity, the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape it, and conservation. The University of Helsinki says many graduates continue to doctoral training, and the degree also gives qualifications for specialist jobs outside academia.
The programme accepts students from selected Bachelor’s programmes at the University of Helsinki: Biology, Environmental Biology, Molecular Biosciences, Agricultural Sciences, Forest Sciences, Geosciences and Geography. It also accepts other domestic and international students with an appropriate BSc degree through an external call. These applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, within areas such as ecology, evolutionary biology, biological data science and conservation biology.
