About this program

The Master of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Science covers ecology and evolutionary biology from DNA, organism, population and ecosystem levels. The programme focuses on the origin of life and its diversification, biodiversity, host-parasite interactions, sexual selection, genetics of adaptation and speciation, evolutionary ecology, and life-history evolution.

Teaching is based on recent international research. The studies include laboratory and field work at the Konnevesi Research Station, together with theoretical study. The University of Jyväskylä also says students can supplement the degree with studies in statistics, chemistry, physics, or social and economic sciences.

The degree takes two years and includes a master’s thesis worth 30 ECTS credits. The thesis takes about five months and may be completed in a research group. The programme also offers opportunities to complete part of the studies at foreign universities.
