Biotechnology, Master of Science (Technology)

Aalto University’s Master’s Programme in Biotechnology covers biotechnology, molecular bioscience, cell engineering, bioprocessing, biomass, and mechanistic and data-driven modelling. The programme also refers to research-level laboratory work in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (Bio2), where students explore biotechnology applications linked to current research.

The programme takes two years and is worth 120 ECTS credits. The structure includes major studies, elective studies, and a master’s thesis. Students complete their compulsory and specialisation courses in the first year, then focus on elective studies and the master’s thesis in the second year. The programme uses group projects, teamwork, individual assignments, problem-based learning, and experimentation. About 25 percent of the courses are in a research-level laboratory. Students can choose elective courses from Aalto and other universities in Finland and abroad, and they can complete practical training or the master’s thesis outside Finland.

Aalto University says the programme is suitable for students who want to build a career in industry or research. It also gives a foundation for doctoral studies.
