Master's Programme in Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology, Master of Science

The Master’s Programme in Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki studies microbes in life, the environment and human health. It covers bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms from the molecular level to global ecosystems. The programme includes microbiology and microbial biotechnology, with elective studies in environment, food, health, viruses, fungi, biotechnology or bioinformatics.

The degree is 120 ECTS credits over two years and starts in autumn. Studies take place through contact teaching. The master’s thesis is a 30 ECTS independent research project in a research group, usually at the University of Helsinki or a partner institution. Students can also carry out laboratory work or thesis research at a partner organisation.

University of Helsinki says the programme suits students interested in microbial effects on global warming, virus-cell interactions, mould problems in buildings, and the use of microbes in industry or medicine.

• A bachelor's degree from a Finnish or international higher education institution.
