Linguistic Data Sciences, Master of Arts

Master’s Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences focuses on the interfaces between languages and digitalization. Students study language in a digitalized society through sociolinguistics, language technology and translation. The programme’s core includes empirical linguistics, with syntax, phonetics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, translation studies and language technology.

The University of Eastern Finland teaches the programme entirely in English and delivers it through contact teaching. Students can choose optional modules to tailor the degree to individual needs. The programme also crosses disciplinary boundaries and collaborates with computer science, data sciences and statistics. Many courses focus on text and speech data mining and big data analytics.

The programme raises questions about how digitalization changes languages, how digital tools are used to study languages, and how language variation is modelled quantitatively. It also covers digital tools and resources for translation, multilingual communication, assistive technologies and geospatial or multivariate analysis.
