Master's Programme in Data Science, Master of Science

The Master’s Programme in Data Science at the University of Helsinki covers computer science, statistics and real-world data challenges. It trains students to analyse complex datasets, build intelligent systems and work with machine learning, artificial intelligence and data mining. The programme also develops skills in statistical and computational methods, high-performance computing and scientific communication.

The programme is 120 ECTS credits and normally takes two years of full-time study. Teaching is in English and delivered through contact teaching. The degree includes common core studies in data science fundamentals, specialisation courses, seminars and project work, academic skills and tools, an optional internship in a research group or company, optional studies in an application domain, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. The common core studies and some specialisation courses are mainly completed during the first year, and the thesis and the rest of the studies during the second year.

The programme does not have study tracks. Students shape their own profile through specialisation courses in core data science or applied data science. The page says the programme is designed for students with a solid background in programming and mathematics or statistics, and it leads to a Master of Science degree.
