Master's Programme in Economics, Master of Social Sciences

The Master’s Programme in Economics at the University of Helsinki teaches you to analyse economic phenomena and apply economic methods to societal and economic issues. The programme covers economic theory, econometric methods, specialised courses in economics, research skills, and a master’s thesis. It has two study tracks: General and Research.

The programme is 120 ECTS credits and is designed to be completed in two years. Teaching is in English and takes place as contact teaching. It consists of lectures, exercise sessions, seminars, and independent study. Most teaching is on campus at the Economicum building. The Helsinki Graduate School of Economics network provides a broad course offering, joint research seminars, and events with international scholars.

The programme is suitable for students interested in economic phenomena from a societal perspective and in mathematical and quantitative methods. The General track emphasises applied economics. The Research track focuses more deeply on economic theory and econometric methods and includes a substantial part of doctoral coursework in economics.
