The Master of Arts in English at Zimbabwe Open University is designed for advanced study in English. Students take compulsory modules including African Literature and Ideological Thought, English as a Second Language, History and Theory of Criticism, Theories of Language Learning, and Zimbabwean and Southern African Literature. The programme also includes compulsory study in English as a Foreign Language, Comparative Literature, Advanced Research Methods, African American Literature and Thought, and Entrepreneurship in the Language Arts.
Teaching and learning includes seminars and research-focused modules, with electives such as Psycholinguistics, Creative Writing, Editing and Publishing, Biography and Autobiography, and Lexicology, Lexicography and Semantics. A dissertation module is included: MENG560: Dissertation. The programme period of study is 1 ½ years, with initial registration of the research project done in Academic Year 2 Semester 1.
