MSc Degree in Disaster Risk and Livelihood Studies

The MSc Degree in Disaster Risk and Livelihood Studies at Women’s University in Africa covers disaster risk reduction and livelihoods. Students study topics that range from Disaster Management Theories to practical approaches for managing disaster risk for community resilience and sustainable human development. The programme also aims to build practical and theoretical skills to manage disaster risk for humans, the environment, and livelihoods, and to inform policy and strategies.

Teaching uses lecture and tutorial sessions, educational tours, simulations, individual and group research, seminar presentations, and e-learning tools. The programme is delivered through weekend classes, evening classes, and open distance learning. Completion takes one and a half. Assessment uses assignments (group and individual) presented in written or class presentation form, with coursework contributing 30% and examinations 70%. The full degree includes 8 core courses in two batches of 4 courses each semester, plus a dissertation.

• A Bachelors’ degree in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Law, Political Science, Education, Social Work, Psychology, Development Studies from a recognised University or any other relevant field with a minimum aggregate of 2.2.
• Employment in the government, Non-Governmental Organisations, or any other civil society organisation in the area of gender policy and women’s rights is an added advantage.
• At least two of professional experience relevant to the programme.
• Applicants must have a good written command of English – the working language of the course.
• A high competence and comfort with computer and Internet use.
