Bachelor of Engineering, Maritime Technology

Bachelor of Engineering, Maritime Technology covers the duties of engine officers. Students study mechanical engineering, seamanship, ship technology and electrical engineering. The programme is designed to lead to Chief Engineer competency and to support applications for certificates of competency from Traficom after the required studies, onboard training and work experience.

Novia University of Applied Sciences describes the studies as combining theoretical teaching, digital learning environments, distance learning, onboard training on merchant ships, work in machine workshops, simulation exercises, workshops and laboratories. The structure includes basic studies, professional studies, elective studies, onboard training and a 15 ECTS thesis. The studies are divided into Support Level, Operational Level and Management Level.

The programme is aimed at students in seafaring degree programmes who can meet the stated health requirements. It leads to careers as chief engineers and to shore-based roles in the maritime field.

Students admitted to seafaring degree programmes must submit a medical certificate showing that they meet the requirements for vision, hearing and color vision, and that they are medically fit for the education. The first health examination must be performed by a Seamen’s Physician at a Seafarers’ Health Care Centre in Finland.
