The Bachelor of Maritime Management, Captain at Novia University of Applied Sciences prepares students for Deck Officer duties and, with experience, for Master Mariner competence. Core studies cover Navigation, Seamanship, Ship Technology, Cargo Handling and Radio Communication. The programme trains students to manoeuvre vessels and transport cargo safely, and aligns with the STCW Convention.
The programme runs for 4.5 years (270 ECTS) and combines theoretical studies with extensive practical training. Teaching uses contact and distance methods, digital platforms, ship simulators and supervised onboard training totaling 360 days on international merchant ships, recorded in an onboard training book. Studies progress through Support Level (Watchman Deck, incl. 60 days training), Operational Level (Watch Officer Deck, incl. 360 days training) and Management Level (Captain). The thesis is 15 credits and can be based on internal or external commissions.
Graduates can apply to Traficom for Watch Officer Deck certification and, with sea service as Deck Officer, for Master Mariner (Chief Officer and Captain’s Unlimited License). The programme provides pathways to sea-going officer roles and land-based positions in the maritime sector.
