The Doctoral Programme in Engineering leads to the Doctor of Science in Technology. It covers research fields including spatial planning and transportation engineering, real estate economics, geoinformatics, civil engineering, water and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and energy technology. Doctoral studies are available in the School of Engineering through the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Built Environment.
The programme consists of doctoral thesis work and studies measured in ECTS credits. The thesis accounts for about 80% of the studies and must contribute to new scientific knowledge in a topic related to the research field. The ECTS studies total 30 credits and are divided into research field studies and general research studies. Doctoral studies are typically carried out as full-time study while working at the university or as part-time study while working in a company.
Aalto University encourages doctoral candidates to spend at least six months of their study time abroad. The programme describes doctoral education as preparation for an academic career as a highly qualified researcher and for demanding expert roles outside academia, or for entrepreneurship.
