The Master’s Programme in Genetics and Molecular Biosciences at the University of Helsinki studies how genes, molecules, and cells govern life. It covers fundamental biological processes across viruses, plants, and animals, from molecular and genetic mechanisms to the regulation of organismal function, adaptation, and health. The programme also builds a foundation for research in the life sciences and biomedical sciences.
Teaching is organised into four study tracks: biochemistry and structural biology; genetics and genomics; cell and developmental biology; and molecular and physiological basis of health. The degree is 120 ECTS credits and is planned to take two years. It combines lectures, laboratory courses, seminars, and project-based learning, with a 30 ECTS master’s thesis, 17 ECTS of elective studies, and optional internship and international mobility periods.
The programme is designed for students who want to apply molecular-level knowledge to research, biotechnology, or health sciences. It also leads to doctoral study in relevant fields of life sciences. Finnish- or Swedish-speaking students in the biology teacher track can qualify as a subject teacher in biology, and students in the genetics and genomics track who meet the stated conditions can continue towards qualification as a hospital geneticist.
