The Master's Programme in Geology and Geophysics at the University of Helsinki covers the Earth’s evolution, raw materials, environmental questions, and the physical evolution of the planet. You study geology and geophysics themes including minerals, rock types, bedrock, groundwater, mineral resources, environmental assessment, sustainable land use, palaeontology, palaeoclimatology, plate tectonics, and the interaction of the mantle and crust.
The programme is taught in English and is completed in two years of full-time study. It is organised around a 30-credit master’s thesis, compulsory common courses, courses in geology and geophysics, and other studies. Thesis work begins with the Conducting Scientific Research course, where you draft a thesis proposal and research plan. The programme has no formal study tracks, and students choose from a wide range of thematic areas. It includes a mandatory internship of typically two to three months.
The programme is designed for students with a strong interest in how the Earth works, from the deep geological past to present-day environmental questions. The University of Helsinki says graduates are ready for research, industry, or the public sector, and the degree qualifies you for doctoral studies in geosciences or a related field.
You are eligible to apply if you hold a bachelor's degree in geosciences, geology, geophysics, physics, chemistry, geography, statistics, computer science, mathematics, biology, archaeology, or environmental sciences.
