The Master’s Programme in Particle Physics and Astrophysical Sciences focuses on the laws of nature from elementary particles to the development of the solar system, stars and galaxies. You study particle physical and astrophysical phenomena and build a quantitative understanding of them. The programme also develops your use of mathematical methods, IT tools and experimental equipment, together with problem-solving and logical deduction skills.
The degree is 120 ECTS credits and takes two years. It includes 90 credits of Master’s studies, including a 30-credit Master’s thesis, and 30 credits of other studies from the programme or other degree programmes. Your studies also include a personal study plan and career orientation and planning. You may also take a traineeship, elective studies and studies offered through cooperation with other degree programmes and universities. The programme has two study tracks: Elementary particle physics and cosmology, and Astrophysical sciences.
The University of Helsinki says the programme is aimed at students with a bachelor’s degree in physics, astronomy or another applicable degree. Depending on the study track, the bachelor’s degree must include at least 20 credits from studies focusing on the basics of modern physics and the structure of matter, or equivalent studies in quantum physics, or the basics of astronomy and astrophysics.
