Smart Grids is a specialisation in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering. Tampere University describes it as a research-based programme that combines electric power engineering with control, electricity markets, ICT and automation. The studies cover advanced energy storage solutions, renewable energy integration, grid automation and demand-response, and data-driven optimisation.
The programme is 120 ECTS credits and lasts two years. Students usually spend three semesters on courses and one semester on the master’s thesis. The studies combine theoretical understanding and analysis with computer simulations and laboratory assignments. Students can also choose minor studies and supplementary courses, or concentrate on major studies.
Tampere University says the specialisation is suitable for students with a Bachelor of Science (Technology) in electrical power engineering, power electronics, electricity markets, energy management, renewable energy sources or a similar field.
