The Doctoral Programme in Medicine trains students to carry out independent scientific research in medicine and health sciences. It covers biostatistics, epidemiology, gerontology, global health and development, health economics, health care management, health services research, health sociology, occupational health, public health, social psychiatry, and social and health policy.
Students acquire in-depth knowledge in their own field and a broader view of medicine or health sciences. They develop scientific thinking, good scientific conduct, research methods, and the ability to report findings orally and in writing. Most doctoral candidates do dissertation work in one of the university’s research groups. The programme consists of general academic competences, discipline- and field-specific studies, and a doctoral dissertation.
Tampere University says the programme prepares graduates for academic research and teaching positions and for other expert, development and management roles in society and the field of health. A doctoral degree can be completed as a Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Philosophy, or Doctor of Health Sciences, depending on the discipline.
