The Master’s Programme in Food Sciences at the University of Helsinki covers the full food production chain, from raw materials and processing technologies to consumer safety and sustainability. Students study food composition, quality and legislation, and build laboratory and research skills in food chemistry, technology, packaging, safety and sensory food science.
The degree is 120 ECTS credits over two years. Students make a personal study plan with 80 ECTS of core studies, 20 ECTS of specialisation studies and 20 ECTS of elective studies. The programme also includes a 30 ECTS master’s thesis, and students may include career planning, an internship and study abroad. Teaching is in English and the mode is contact teaching.
The University of Helsinki says the programme is for students interested in food science, food innovation or sustainable food systems. The degree qualifies graduates for doctoral studies in food sciences or a related field.
You can apply if you hold a bachelor’s degree, or will complete one by the end of the application period, from a Finnish university or university of applied sciences in food sciences or a related natural science field, including chemistry and physics. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in food sciences or natural sciences from a foreign university are also eligible. Current University of Helsinki students may continue directly with a bachelor’s degree in Food Sciences, and students with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Molecular Biosciences from the University of Helsinki may also continue under certain conditions.
