Master's Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System, Master of Science, 2 years

The Master’s Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences is a two-year Master of Science programme. It covers meteorology, atmospheric science and climate-system science. The programme also addresses hydrosphere geophysics, cryology, hydrology, oceanography, atmospheric chemistry and aerosol physics. The University of Helsinki says the programme educates meteorologists in Finland for weather forecasting, meteorological research and aviation safety.

Studies consist of lecture courses, seminars, laboratory work, intensive courses and project work. The master’s degree includes a 30 ECTS written dissertation. Students choose a topic with a supervisor and take part in a student seminar that supports the thesis process. The dissertation may be written in Finnish, Swedish or English.

The programme has five study tracks: Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Physics, Biosphere-atmosphere cycles, Climate and Sustainability, Meteorology, and Physics of the hydrosphere. The University of Helsinki describes the programme as research-oriented. Graduates of the meteorology study track are qualified to use the title of Meteorologist.

The main target groups are students with a bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, meteorology, geophysics, geosciences, forest sciences, environmental sciences or environmental technology.

Applicants from another field are also eligible if they have at least 60 ECTS credits in the above-mentioned disciplines and adequate mathematical and computational skills.
