The University of Oulu’s doctoral programme in Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences leads to the Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Odontology, Doctor of Philosophy, or Doctor of Health Sciences. It covers medicine, medical physics and technology, oral health sciences, nursing science, and health management science. The programme prepares experts and researchers who influence clinical practices, health policy, and international guidelines.
Doctoral studies normally take 3–4 years of full-time work. They include doctoral research, scientific publications, a doctoral thesis and its public defence, plus general and transferable skills studies and field-specific studies. Doctoral researchers work with a principal supervisor and a follow-up group, and may complete field-specific studies through seminars, methodology courses, scientific writing, research institute work, and advanced courses.
