New Media is a two-year Master of Arts in Art and Design at Aalto University. It focuses on emerging digital technologies and their impacts on individuals, organisations, and society. The studies cover communication, creative production, distribution, academic communication and writing, and research skills. The programme includes artificial intelligence, extended reality, media art, media culture, design, creative computation, and physical computing.
The studies are project-oriented and combine practice with theory. The first semester introduces key topics and essential tools for new media art and design. The spring semester of the first year moves into advanced seminars and studios in specific specialisation areas. The year ends with a first-year capstone project. The second year is for elective studies, research skills, and the Master’s Thesis. Students can choose 30 ECTS of electives and may complete a minor subject.
Aalto University says the major is part of the Aalto Media Lab and sits at the intersection of arts, design, and technology. Completion of the MA degree makes a graduate eligible to apply for doctoral studies.
