Sound in New Media, Master of Arts (Art and Design)

The Major in Sound in New Media explores emerging digital technology and its aural impact in society. It focuses on acoustic communication, sonic interaction, new interfaces for musical expression, and the challenges these raise for art, design, and creative production in the auditory domain.

The programme is project-oriented and combines practice with theory, hands-on work with minds-on work. It uses interdisciplinary modules, collaboration, intensive workshops, tutored studio work, and a Personal Study Plan. The first year is for programme- and major-specific studies. In the second year, students choose from a wide selection of other courses and minor subjects while completing the Master’s Thesis. Research methods and academic writing are part of the curriculum.

Aalto University states that graduates can continue to doctoral level. The major also gives access to international study and research networks, and students may include Music Technology courses from the Sibelius Academy in the degree.
