The Sustainable Art and Design master’s programme introduces environmental art, public art, socially engaged art and service design. Students work at the intersections of art and design and develop skills in socially engaged art, public art, applied visual arts, service design, collaborative and interdisciplinary working, community- and environment-centred design, entrepreneurship, and arts-based research in Arctic contexts.
The degree is a two-year, project-based programme with a strong working-life orientation. Students carry out projects in real environments with real stakeholders outside the university. The studies use art-based research and action research, and the Arctic nature and culture form the frame and context for the programme.
The University of Lapland says the programme is designed to respond to the changing role of the creative professional in society. It leads to advanced expertise in art and environmental issues, art and social work, regional development, project design and management, place-based artistic and development strategies, and research and evaluation in art, design and sustainable development.
