Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science is a Master of Health Sciences at the University of Oulu. It brings together epidemiological methods and biomedical data science methods. Students study epidemiological study designs, biases and confounding, statistical methods in epidemiology, life-course epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, global public health, genetic and molecular epidemiology, bioinformatics, Python, machine learning for healthcare, and research skills.
The programme is 120 ECTS credits and takes 2 years. It is taught in English through contact teaching and independent learning. Studies consist of compulsory advanced studies, a 40 ECTS master’s thesis, language studies, and optional studies in a personal study plan. Practical teaching sessions and the thesis use some of the largest longitudinal cohorts in Europe.
The curriculum is research-based and linked to the University of Oulu research profile in human health and wellbeing. The thesis is a 6 to 9 month research project, carried out with support from research or clinical groups at the University of Oulu. The programme also offers access to doctoral education after graduation.
