Master's Programme in Changing Education, Master of Arts (Education)

The Master’s Programme in Changing Education at the University of Helsinki studies education from the individual level to policy level. It combines educational psychology, neuroscience, sociology, and pedagogy. The programme is built around three main areas: Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusivity; Educational Psychology and Neuroscience; and Educational Institutions and Policy.

The programme lasts two years and uses contact teaching. The curriculum includes compulsory and optional modules in educational sciences, qualitative and quantitative research methods, a master’s thesis, a master’s thesis seminar, and optional studies in related disciplines. The master’s thesis is an independent project based on empirical research or a literature review, and students can complete it in one of the Faculty of Educational Sciences’ research projects. Students can also include an internship or an exchange semester abroad.

The programme is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and basic knowledge of research methods and education. The degree gives general eligibility for doctoral studies and for positions requiring master’s-level expertise. It does not confer Finnish teacher qualification.
