In the Master’s Programme in Film and Television, major in Cinematography, students deepen vocational competence in the artistic, production and technical sides of film, TV and advertising productions. The programme covers artistic means of expression, cinematography methods, challenging technical concepts, equipment and work methods. It also covers the cinematographer’s changing role and new artistic and technical working methods and technologies, together with research connected to them.
The programme runs for two years and is taught through contact teaching. Study is mainly based on practical learning by doing, work in small groups, personal guidance and dialogue-based interaction. Students take extensive master’s study modules and workshop exercises in Finland and internationally, and they study vocational technology and artistic expression. They are introduced to all phases of preliminary planning in cinematography and to artistic and production cooperation in film and television productions.
Aalto University says the major is one of the majors in the Master’s Programme of Film and Television. Students complete 30 ECTS of obligatory department joint courses in entrepreneurial and working life skills, analytical skills and research skills. Students are encouraged to take part of their studies in international exchange programmes or internships.
