Collaborative and Industrial Design, Master of Arts (Art and Design)

This programme focuses on collaborative design processes and industrial design, from concept design through prototyping to implementation. It covers work with end users, experts and industry partners to develop sustainable, human-centred solutions for challenges in society and business.

The programme is 120 ECTS credits and takes two years of contact teaching. Students begin with principles of human-centred design, then move into more personalised study paths. The spring semester begins with a mandatory interaction design course for everyone. The second study year is dedicated to the master’s thesis, which is 30 ECTS credits. Students also take joint studies in the Department of Design and choose elective studies in line with their Personal Study Plan.

Students specialise in one of three areas: service and social design, industrial design and product development, or interaction design and UX. Aalto University says the studies prepare graduates for doctoral study.
