Communications Engineering, Master of Science (Technology)

The Communications Engineering major covers theoretical fundamentals and hands-on applications of communications technology. It includes 5G and beyond, IoT, machine learning, ambient intelligence, and wearable computing.

The degree takes two years and totals 120 ECTS credits. The structure is 60 ECTS of major studies, 30 ECTS of elective studies, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. Aalto University says the compulsory and optional major courses are completed during the first year, and the second year is for elective studies and the thesis. Teaching methods consist mainly of lectures, individual and group projects, and hands-on experiments. Students can choose electives from Aalto and other universities in Finland and abroad. The major also offers study paths in networked systems, wireless communications, and ubiquitous computing.

Aalto University says the programme gives eligibility for scientific postgraduate studies in Finland. It also offers exchange studies, a second-year double degree option at Grenoble INP in France, and opportunities for practical training or a master’s thesis abroad.
