Aalto University’s Master’s Programme in Creative Sustainability brings together design, business, and materials and chemical engineering. It focuses on sustainability, systems thinking, creative teamwork, and the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development. For students in chemical engineering, it also covers circular economy and biomaterials, including bio-based materials and metal recycling.
The programme lasts 2 years and is taught in English through contact teaching. It has 120 ECTS credits: 60 ECTS of compulsory studies in Creative Sustainability, 20 ECTS of minor studies, 10 ECTS of elective studies, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. The compulsory joint studies and the compulsory CHEM branch studies are intended for the first year. The second year allows more flexible course choices, including international exchange, internship, or courses from the alternative CS list.
The programme is part of EIT Climate-KIC. Students work in multidisciplinary teams, take part in classroom teaching, laboratory work, group assignments, and practical projects carried out for partner organisations. Aalto University says the programme is a foundation for doctoral studies.
