About this program

Documentary Film is a major in Aalto University’s Master of Arts (Art and Design). It aims to form innovative, critical and analytical documentary filmmakers for national and international settings. Students study the history and conventions of documentary filmmaking, and the programme also addresses documentary film as storytelling, art and research.

The programme runs for two years and is taught through contact teaching. Studies centre on developing and directing the diploma film and the related written dissertation work. Teaching includes film workshops and lecture modules built around different themes. Students also take obligatory departmental joint courses worth 30 ECTS, and they can choose courses from other Aalto Schools. The programme also supports collaboration with film festivals and offers exchange abroad.

Documentary Film is one of the majors in the Master’s Programme of Film and Television.
